THE FUTURE OF MAKING

The manipulation of materials and making methods.

For example, using laser cutting or 3D printing for a dress or manipulating concrete so it looks like an entirely different material almost draping like fabric.

How can manipulated materials and processes

+ inspire innovation

+ push experimentation

+ promote collaboration

EXPLORATION OF PROCESS

Cincinnati Inc. is a manufacturing company that specializes in large format 3D printing. A close partner to our studio, we wanted to explore this technique of manufacturing and design objects that are specifically made to use this unique technology.

How can we design specifically for this material and process?

Every printed layer is tamped down, and adds carbon fiber, glass fiber, or organic fiber to strengthen the material.

IDEATION

Initial concept ideation through sketching and 3D prints exploring large format 3D printing through furniture designed for collaboration.

CONCEPT EXPLORATION

Concept 01

Concept 01

+ Pieces too big for a small space

+ Transformative vignettes and dynamic arrangements

+ Requires manufacturing of two separate products

Concept 02

Concept 02

+ Functions as both a table and a seat

+ Textured table surface

+ Explores Cincinnati Inc.’s technology to include thermoforming

Cincinnati Inc. was willing to experiment with their technology, however, due to Covid-19 we were unable to test new methods.

Concept 03

Concept 03

+ Functions as both a table and a seat

+ Flat surface for writing or sketching

+ Difficult to manufacture, complicated material overuse

CAD ITERATION

We took CONCEPT 03 into further iteration, exploring materials, details, and textures.

INSPIRE, INNOVATE, COLLABORATE

The final design facilitates a space, environment, and ability to collaborate. The raw honesty of the making process for the Stable inspires designers to experiment with materials and process.

FLEXIBILITY

The manufacturing process uses a large format 3D printer from Cincinnati Inc. to make most of the Stable, creating a unique texture. The flat top used for writing and sketching is made from a bent sheet metal piece that slides into the allowed 3D printed space.
